Inner Peace is a collection of poetry, reflections and original artwork by Sir Shadow, the New York artist and poet known for drawings created with a single continuous line.
Written from his room at the Whitehouse Hotel on the Bowery, the last flophouse on the old Skid Row, these pages are what he calls medication for his patients: honest, hard-won wisdom on love, loss, faith, self-worth and the power of a positive state of mind. As he puts it, once the positive energy works on him, he passes it on.
Inside you’ll find more than seventy poems and reflections, including Asking God, Blame Died, Keep the Peace Within, Paradise Is Now and The ABC’s of New York City, alongside dozens of his signature white-line drawings of musicians and dancers, glowing color pieces and bold paintings.
Raised in Jamaica, Queens, Sir Shadow began writing poetry as a child. Working without formal art training, he developed a style all his own that he calls “Flowetry.” His work has appeared in galleries, public spaces and neighborhood establishments, and he created artwork for Gil Scott-Heron’s 1994 album Spirits.
Part poetry book, part art book and part guide for finding your way forward, Inner Peace is for anyone who has hit a dead end and needed to find a new road.
“Peace is now, paradise begins and ends with you.” — Sir Shadow
